UK wind projects mired in pre-approval stage, face extended delays

21 May 2008 - New wind energy projects in the UK are mired in pre-approval delays, with at least 222 new projects awaiting sanction, even though the UK government has promised to speed up the process of inquiry and approval, according to the Guardian.

British ministers have reportedly pledged their support to new sustainable energy projects and have announced their intention to reduce or eliminate possible barriers to the implementation of clean power projects, according to the news source.

The Guardian reported that the average time for planners to give their verdict on a project has increased to over two years, over the past four years, with delays occurring as a consequence of geographical location and project format.

Electricity generation major E.ON has observed that project inquiry and approval process takes two to three times longer on an average in Scotland, when compared to England.

The news source quoted statistics from the British Wind Energy Association's annual review, with approval rates in Wales and Northern Ireland averaging 77 per cent and 93 per cent, respectively. England and Scotland fared less favourably, with approval rates of 65 per cent and 55 per cent, respectively.
