13 May 2008 - Dutch-German energy group Trianel has been given the go-ahead to build a €1bn ($1.5bn) 750 MW hard-coal fired power station in western Germany.

The 28 partner companies from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, arranged by state lender WestLB, involved in project, have given their backing to build the new power plant at Luenen in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Trianel has said it aims to start building the plant later this year and to begin producing power from it in 2012.
Trianel last year completed an 850 MW gas fired power plant project at Hamm-Uentrop with its partner companies. Both plants are supplied by Siemens Power Generation.

The Trianel utility network aims to compete with big energy companies, allowing the partners to take advantage of power production assets even if individually their contribution is small, and to diversify between power and gas generation.
