Egypt to assess first nuclear plant's tender papers

7 May 2008 - Egypt has announced that it will assess on 29 May tender papers of the 21 international consultancy houses that bid for building Egypt's first nuclear power plant.

Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younes said that Egypt, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, has taken several steps to provide an appropriate infrastructure of the country's first-ever nuclear plant, as well as well-trained human cadres.

In February, Egypt launched a tender to choose an international consultancy house to build the plant at a cost ranging from $1.5bn-$1.8bn. The plant is expected to be built at Dabba on the Mediterranean coast, west of the main harbor of Alexandria, some 220 km north to Cairo.
