IPL receives siting approval for 630 MW hybrid plant

30 April 2008 -- Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), a unit of Alliant Energy Corp., received pre-certification from the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) to build the Sutherland Generating Station Unit 4.

The IUB approved IPL's siting application for the 630 MW hybrid plant pending a review of the viability of carbon capture and sequestration technology for the plant. Also, the facility must use predetermined percentages of switch grass, corn stalks or other similar agriculturally based products as its fuel source. Ten percent of the company's energy must come from renewable sources by 2013. IPL must also increase the number of renewables in its portfolio by one percent per year for 15 years after the unit becomes operational. The IUB expects to make a final decision based on this information within the next several weeks.

IPL expects to have all permitting, ratemaking and regulatory approvals in late 2008. The company also expects to begin construction by the end of the year and expects the facility to be operational in 2013.
