GE-Hitachi talking to utilities on UK nuclear reactors

24 April 2008 - GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy, a joint-venture between GE and Hitachi, said that they are in talks with several power companies to have its nuclear reactor design licensed in the UK.

"We are actively and closely working with several utilities to license the ESBWR as part of the UK's design assessment process," GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy said in a statement. The Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor is the name of the GE-Hitachi reactor design.

This comes after German utility E.ON said on Wednesday it had selected to use French company Areva's reactor design for potential new nuclear projects in the UK. The Areva reactor design was a joint submission with EDF and the French power company has also selected this design.

The UK government had invited nuclear power plant operators and utilities to nominate a maximum of three designs to support and asked them to rank the designs according to preference to ensure the designs with the greatest chance of being built are given priority in the approval process.

Areva, Westinghouse, a unit of Toshiba and GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy are the three companies with nuclear reactor designs going through UK approval, after Atomic Energy of Canada pulled out its reactor design from the process in early April.
