22 April 2008 - The Italian government-backed incentive to encourage the generation of solar power has reached an established capacity of 100 MW, according to Gestore dei Servizi Elettrici.
The incentive program pays generators of photovoltaic power a premium over the market rate, in a bid to encourage new investment in the sector.
The 100 MW capacity is reportedly the result of new generation being established in line with the government incentive.
Gestore dei Servizi Elettrici (GSE), the public entity that manages the program, has stated that it has paid out €20m ($32m) in incentives so far.
Around 10 000 solar power facilities are reportedly using the incentive, with almost half of these installations producing between 1 kW and 3 kW of electricity.
