EU mulls fast-tracking of CCS demonstration projects

18 April 2008 - The European Union is mulling an acceleration of efforts to capture and store CO2 by fast-tracking proposals for around 12 demonstration projects, reported Reuters.

The European Commission (EC) has previously proposed legislation to give carbon capture and storage (CCS) a boost, especially by funding the construction of 12 demonstration projects and prescribing a legal and regulatory framework for CCS projects.

The EC could also possibly disengage CCS from a set of energy reforms, which were announced in January 2008, in a bid to attain political consensus among EU ministers at a meeting scheduled for June 2008.

The news source noted that the proposal has received encouraging signs but there is uncertainty over issues like security measures for the stored CO2.
