Braintree to break ground for 116 MW gas-fired plant

14 April 2008 -- Braintree Electric Light Department is set to start work on a $110 million power plant at its Potter Road headquarters in Massachusetts.

The station will have two 58 MW natural-gas powered Trent 60 turbines that can go from cold start to full power in less than 10 minutes. The turbines will be supplied by Rolls-Royce and delivered in the summer.

The 116 MW plant will replace Potter 1, the original power generating station at the site, which operated for 50 years. The smaller existing plant, Potter II is being kept in operating shape as a reserve.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Thomas A. Watson Generating Station were held April 12. Plans call for the new plant to open early next year.
