Progress Florida OKs long-lead item buy for nuclear power plants

7 April 2008 -- Progress Energy Florida, a unit of Progress Energy, said it signed a letter of intent with Westinghouse Electric Co. and The Shaw Group Inc.'s Power Group authorizing the purchase of long-lead-time materials for up to two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors at a site in Levy County, Fla. The company has not yet entered into an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.

Progress Energy Florida submitted a filing with the Florida Public Service Commission on March 11, proposing two nuclear units in Levy County. The Commission has scheduled hearings on the project in late May. Progress has previously stated an expectation to file a combined operating license (COL) application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission sometime this summer. No final decision has been made to proceed with the Levy County project.
