TransAlta, Alstom to develop CCS project

3 April 2008 -- TransAlta Corp. and Alstom signed an agreement to work together to develop a large scale CO2 capture and storage (CCS) facility in Canada.

The facility will be located in Alberta after what Alstom deemed as "favorable geological conditions" in the province.

The project will pilot Alstom's proprietary chilled ammonia process. TransAlta's plan with Alstom is to retrofit the technology at one of TransAlta's coal fired generating stations west of Edmonton.

The first phase of the overall project, aimed at advancing and improving understanding of CO2 capture and storage technology will begin this year at a cost of approximately $12 million (CAD). This, and subsequent phases will continue over the next five years with testing expected to begin in 2012.

TransAlta has also partnered with experts at the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE), part of the University of Calgary, to quantify CO2 sequestration potential west of Edmonton. The results, due in January 2009, will assess the potential of selected sequestration sites in the area surrounding several power plants.
