Southern Nuclear files for COL

31 March 2008 -- Southern Nuclear Operating Co. filed an application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a combined construction and operating license (COL) for the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Georgia.

The plant, owned by Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power Corp., the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities, has selected Westinghouse AP1000 technology for two additional units at the plant site.

Southern Nuclear applied for an early site permit (ESP) for Plant Vogtle in August 2006. Georgia Power also would need approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission before deciding to build the new units.

Southern Nuclear, a unit of Southern Co., operates Plant Vogtle's two existing nuclear power units for the plant owners as well as the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant and the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant in Georgia and Alabama, respectively.
