IPL to develop fuel for 630 MW hybrid

26 March 2008 -- Interstate Power and Light Co. (IPL) said it will help develop a renewable fuel to power the proposed Sutherland Generating Station in Iowa.

Prairie Lands Bio-Products, a not-for-profit organization of switchgrass growers, expects to study and assess methods to develop a commercially viable market for switchgrass or other similar agriculturally-based products for the proposed 630 MW Sutherland Generating Station.

IPL, a unit of Alliant Energy Corp., said it would work Prairie Lands with in attempting to identify methods to develop, collect, aggregate, process, and deliver the products to the power plant.

The Sutherland station's hybrid technology is said to utilize switchgrass, corn stalks or other similar agriculturally based products for up to 10 percent of its fuel source. An additional 19 MW equivalent of steam cogeneration will be available for use by nearby industries.

The plant is expected to be operational in 2013.
