EDB targets 1.45 GW capacity by 2012 - Brazil

19 March 2008 - Brazilian power company EDB plans to increase its generation capacity from 1.04 GW to 1.45 GW by 2012, investor relations executive Flávia Heller said in a meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

New capacity primarily will come from the 720 MW coal fired Pecém plant, which is a 50/50 partnership with power company MPX. EDB, owned by Portugal's EDP, will gain 360 MW from Pecém, which is due to start operations in 2012.

In addition to Pecém, EDB expects to start operations at the 29 MW Santa Fé hydro plant in 2009, when it also will bring online 20 MW from upgrades to existing small-scale hydros, Heller said.

The 1.45 GW does not include acquisitions or the approval of new generation projects.
