12 March 2008 - Bolivian President Evo Morales has said that electricity production and distribution must become a public service to benefit all Bolivians.
At the official ceremony to kick-off a national 'energy revolution', Morales said the current strategy is being carried out in cooperation with Cuba and Venezuela, among other countries.
Morales officially began the free delivery of 5.8m compact fluorescent light bulbs to households in the cities of El Alto, La Paz, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba.
Morales said, "Energy is not a merchandise, and it cannot be a private service; hence the Executive's willingness to turn it into a service for the people and secure its quality."
At the ceremony, both Havana Ambassador to La Paz Rafael Dausa and Counselor Minister of Venezuela Douglas Perez recalled the role of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, as the pioneer in energy efficiency plans in the continent.
