12 March 2008 - The East African 'Northern Corridor' economies of Kenya, Uganda, DR Congo, Rwanda and Burundi are pushing for electricity grid interconnections as well as exploring new sources of energy to check the power crisis that has hit the region.
Under the proposed strategy, grid interconnections would be built to enable power flow from places of abundance to power deficit areas along the corridor.
Negash Engidasew, the acting head of the Eastern Africa Electricity Power Pool, told a meeting of the corridor member states in Kampala recently that the region had several energy resources, especially in the DR Congo, which remained untapped.
He said: "A lot needs to be done to exploit these resources to put them to proper use.
"The sector is under-developed. There are some interconnections already but negotiations are on bilateral terms. We need to move swiftly and embrace regional interconnections."
