AE&E scoops big FGD order from Romanian coal plant

22 February 2008 - Austrian Energy & Environment (AE&E) has been awarded the contract for a turnkey flue gas desulphurisation plant for an existing brown coal power station in Romania.

The total value of the project is over €220m ($326m) - the largest order ever received by AE&E Group's Austrian subsidiary in its whole history.

Under the contract with S.C. Complexul Energetic Turceni S.A. for the construction of a flue gas desulphurisation plant, AE&E is the general contractor with responsibility for the engineering and construction, assembly and commissioning of four flue gas scrubbers with a desulphurisation capacity of 96.4 per cent, together with the construction all electrical and control systems.

The power station's four units are each of 330 MW capacity. The contract also covers ancillary plants such as the limestone-processing unit, the flue gas system and the gypsum dewaterinig unit. The project schedule provides for handover of the first three units by the end of 2010, and completion of the last unit by the spring of 2013.

"The Turceni project is not only the biggest contract in the history of the Environment Business Unit in Graz but also a major milestone in the process of expanding our operations in the growth markets of South Eastern Europe, where we are positioned as a market leader in flue gas cleaning technology.

"In recent years stricter environmental regulations have led to much more sophisticated technical requirements in these countries, not least as a result of the EU's eastward enlargement, and the trend is still rising," said Georg Gasteiger, Austrian Energy & Environment's CEO.
