Electricite du Liban scheme delayed

21 February 2008 - The deadline for bids to save Libya's loss-making state utility company Electricite du Liban (EdL) has been delayed by two months amid continuing political instability.

According to MEED, bids for the project were due to be submitted by 15 February, but are now due by 15 April.

The Closing the Financial Gap project to reduce EdL's losses of up to $1bn a year includes two contracts.

The first covers improving the management of tariff collection, the introduction of automatic metering and the installation of 1.25m electricity meters in homes across the country.

The second contract covers the operation and maintenance of the distribution network.

Nine companies have been prequalified for the first contract and three for the second.
