29 January 2008 -- The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) Division of Air Quality issued a final air permit for an 800 MW advanced clean-coal unit planned at Duke Energy's Cliffside Steam Station.

Cliffside's final air permit includes emissions limits for SO₂ and NO that are stricter than federal or state requirements. It also includes a commitment from Duke Energy Carolinas to address the emission of CO₂.

Once the new unit comes online in 2012, Duke Energy will retire four older generating units capable of generating approximately 200 MW at the Cliffside site.

Construction of the new unit is expected to begin immediately.
