France's EDF enters Polish electricity market

21 December 2007 - France's EDF Trading has carried out its first electricity trades in Poland, the largest energy consumer in central and eastern Europe, it has announced.

The trades were executed in the spot and forward markets following the acquisition of a Polish trading licence, it said.

"With an established business in western Europe, building up a trading presence in Central and Eastern European electricity markets has been a strategic priority for EDF Trading," said Namesh Hansjee, head of trading at EDF Trading.

"A broad view across the European markets is crucial to understanding price developments in individual countries and markets are becoming increasingly interconnected."

EDF Trading, a wholly owned unit of EDF, believes market liquidity in Poland should improve with tax regime changes and the possibility tariffs may disappear, the statement said.

It set up a central European team in 2005, covering 12 countries, including Poland, Slovakia and Hungary, as well as Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovenia.
