US to help China on SO2 trading

17 December 2007 - The United States has agreed to help China establish its own sulphur dioxide emissions trading program from coal fired power plants.

China within the past year stated its desire to establish an SO2 market but their request for help from the US Environmental Protection Agency represents a major step forward in implementation of their own system. The EPA has coordinated the American SO2 system for over 15 years.

The agreement was reached in Beijing as part of the third meeting of the US-China Strategic Economic Dialogue that US President George W. Bush and Chinese Premier Hu Jintao commenced last year.

The agreement on biofuels committed the nations to cooperate on the "scientific, technical and policy aspects" within the growing industry. Among these includes "the formulation of a unified assessment standard" and sharing best practices for growing feedstocks and converting them into fuel.

Rural development was also listed also a major priority.

The US also agreed to help China limit the sulphur content of transportation fuels to 50 ppm as part of China's 12th Five-Year Plan.
