12 November 2007 -- FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company announced the Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station has met the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) preliminary requirements to extend the operating licenses for its two units for an additional 20 years.

Originally authorized to operate for 40 years, licenses for Beaver Valley Unit 1 and Unit 2 are set to expire in 2016 and 2027, respectively. License renewals would extend Unit 1's license until 2036 and Unit 2's license until 2047.

During the next two years, the NRC will conduct several on-site audits of Beaver Valley's structures and components. In addition, an environmental survey will be conducted to ensure that continued plant operations have no adverse impact on local surroundings. A final decision by the NRC on Beaver Valley's license applications is expected during the third quarter of 2009.

The Beaver Valley Power Station has generated more than 250 million MWh of electricity since it opened. It is owned by the Akron, Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corp. and is operated by FirstEnergy's FENOC subsidiary.
