German economy minister Glos opposes EU plans to unbundle utilities

9 November 2007 - German economy minister Michael Glos said he opposes demands by the European Commission to unbundle utilities so that power plants and electricity grids are operated by separate entities.

'I am in favour of strong energy companies,' Glos said at a meeting with the heads of E.ON, RWE, Vattenfall and EnBW.

'I am very glad that we have strong energy companies in Germany that can hold their own in European and international competition.'

The four utilities control more than 80 per cent of Germany's power plants combined, FT Deutschland said, citing the German Cartel Office.
