With construction of three wind power projects well under way, We Energies announced plans for another wind farm.
The Milwaukee-based utility ordered a $200 million wind project that would generate about 100 MW of electricity. The project would consist of 50 to 65 turbines, depending on the size and power output of the turbines eventually selected.
We Energies requested that FPL Energy of Juno Beach, Fla., secure the necessary leases and permits for the project. Funding for the wind farm now under construction is included in a request to raise power prices in January.
The deal with FPL Energy was negotiated as a side agreement to the $1 billion sale of the Point Beach nuclear plant by the Milwaukee utility to FPL.
Wisconsin is expected to see many new wind farms announced as utilities comply with a state law requiring that 10 percent of the state's electricity be generated from renewable sources of power by 2015. We Energies will spend $1.5 billion on wind power projects to comply with that mandate.
