24 October 2007 -- United Illuminating Co. and NRG Energy Inc. may spend as much as $700 million to build 400 to 700 MW of peaking capacity in Connecticut. The proposal comes as a result of Connecticut legislation, which required United Illuminating to come up with a plan to generate power for Connecticut Light & Power at peak times. The proposal, to be submitted to state regulators early next year, could result in operational plants as soon as 2009 and would bring a Connecticut utility back into the generation business for the first time since the General Assembly deregulated utilities in 1999.
