18 October 2007 - Contracts worth about $1.3bn to build new power plants in Iraq and overhaul existing ones have been awarded to foreign firms, including an Iranian company, Iraq's electricity minister has said.
"The Ministry of Electricity sealed contracts with American, British, German, Finnish, Italian, Iranian and Chinese firms to build new power plants with different production capacity in several Iraqi cities," the Minister of Electricity Karim Wahid told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
Iraq is seeking to bridge shortages in power output and more contracts are now under consideration, he said.
Of the two new projects Iraq has agreed to finance, Mr. Wahid said, the largest is a $940m power plant in Wasit to be built by a Chinese company, which he said was named Shanghai Heavy Industry. That project would pump some 1300 MW of electricity into the Iraqi grid.
For comparison, all of the plants currently connected to Iraq's grid produce a total of roughly 5000 MW.
He said that Iraq had already spent $12m leveling the ground in preparation for the Chinese plant. The Sadr City project, which will include a small refinery, will cost $150m and be built by an Iranian company, Sunir, Mr. Wahid said. That plant is expected to produce about 160 MW.
The Ministry of Electricity is studying contracts to build more power plants in Karbala and other cities, Wahid said.
