17 October 2007 - E.ON has won approval from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform to build a new 1200 MW gas fired power station at Drakelow in Derbyshire, UK
The news means that construction at the site of the former coal fired power station could start as early as next year with full commercial operation expected early in 2011.
The new Drakelow power station will consist of three high efficiency units that will produce enough power for around one million homes and ensure lower carbon emissions through the use of state-of-the-art technologies.
Dr Paul Golby, Chief Executive of E.ON UK, said: "This new station, combined with the billions of pounds we're investing in new renewables and coal developments, shows our commitment to tackling the twin challenges of ensuring security of power supply for the UK and the global threat of climate change."
E.ON has plans to invest £3bn ($6.1bn) in the UK over the next three years.
Earlier this year, construction started at the new gas-fired CHP station on the Isle of Grain in Kent where the supply of excess heat to the nearby LNG terminal will allow for a reduction in carbon emissions of up to 350 000 tonnes a year.
Onshore works have also started at the site of Robin Rigg, set to be one of the world's largest offshore wind farms, and construction has recently finished at the company's dedicated biomass power station, Steven's Croft in Lockerbie.
The company has also submitted a S36 application to build two new supercritical coal units at Kingsnorth in Kent and has recently put in a scoping statement to statutory consultees to build a dedicated renewable energy plant in Sheffield.
