Coal gasification power plant planned near Edmonton

15 October 2007 - A research partnership between Ottawa, Alberta and Epcor Utilities is expected to lead to a full-scale coal gasification power plant. The project will be located at EPCOR's Genesee Generating Station west of Edmonton.

The engineering design project is expected to cost $33 million, an expense to be split equally among the Canadian government, EPCOR, and Alberta Energy Research Institute. Over the next two years, researchers will conduct front-end design work for a power plant that would turn sub-bituminous coal into synthesis gas and hydrogen. The work is scheduled for completion in 2009, and a 500-MW generating station could be in operation in Alberta as early as 2015.
