Photovoltaic projects continue to gain momentum in Spain

15 October 2007 - According to a report by Reuters, Spain's number of photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants is increasing, and looks set to exceed the government's expectations in the not too distant future.

The growth is thought to be primarily because of the country's favourable tariffs for renewable energies.

At the current rate of expansion, the country will have somewhere between 800 MW and 1200 MW of PV power by next year, compared to an estimated target of 400 MW by 2010.

Spain's industry minister Joan Clos is quoted as saying: "We already have 80 per cent of the target."

The ministry said that once the country reaches the 1200 MW mark of PV solar power, the tariff rate will be reduced by 5 per cent, adding that at the current rate of power production, Spain will create employment for 200 000 people by 2010.
