11 October 2007 - The French state-owned group Gaz de France (GdF) has announced the acquisition of 95 per cent of French wind power group Erelia, for an undisclosed sum, which will bring its total wind power capacity to 110 MW by the end of 2007.
GdF which has agreed to merge with Suez in 2008, aims to have total electricity capacity of 10 000 MW by 2012, with 2 000MW produced from renewable sources. Half of the 2000 MW will be in France while the other half will be in Italy, Britain, Spain, Portugal and Poland.
"Ninety-five percent of the renewable sources will be from wind power," Henri Ducre, business director at Gaz de France, told reporters after a news conference on GdF's wind power projects.
The remaining 80 per cent of the group's power production will come from combined-cycle natural gas stations, Ducre added.
Since European gas and power markets opened in July, GdF has snatched around 12 000 retail customers from EdF, representing an 80 per cent share of those clients that have left the former power monopoly for the free market.
On top of developing its own capacity, the group is working on a deal with EdF to renew a contract for nuclear power generation. A nuclear reactor has an average capacity of 900 MW.
