5 October 2007 – The UK government announced today that Clipper Windpower of California, USA, is to develop a new generation of giant offshore wind turbines in the North East of England.
Regional development agency One North East has agreed to invest a £5m ($10.2m) package of support into Clipper's "Project Britannia" - a plan to develop a 7.5 MW offshore wind turbine.
Clipper Windpower is to use facilities at the New and Renewable Energy Centre in Blyth, Northumberland, UK, to construct the prototype offshore turbine, known as "Million Barrel Equivalent".
It is hoped the prototype project could eventually lead to further contracts to build the new generation of wind turbines in the region, which could have the potential of creating several hundred new jobs.
Speaking to Platts, Dr Gordon Edge, director of economics at the British Wind Energy Association, said: "Potentially, this could be a very significant move", and that "This is the first publicly announced plan to manufacture offshore wind turbines in the UK."
Business and Enterprise Secretary John Hutton said: "Clipper Windpower's decision to develop a new generation of offshore wind turbines in the North East of England is further evidence that the UK is fast becoming a magnet for renewable energy investment."
