2 October 2007 - Wales' Cardiff University's new Gas Turbine Research Centre, a world-leading power generation and emissions research centre is to be formally opened in Port Talbot by Wales' First Minister, the Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan, on Wednesday 10 October.

The Centre, one of only a handful of its kind anywhere in the world, will be used for testing liquid and gaseous fuels for the power generation and aviation industries. It contains two testing rigs and has several features which make it unique.

The rigs can handle temperatures of more than 900 degrees Kelvin and pressure of up to 16 atmospheres. The Centre has already secured research contracts for alternative and cleaner fuels. The Centre will also be available to companies on a commercial basis, bringing an economic boost to South Wales.

The testing equipment has been donated to Cardiff by technological research company QinetiQ. The establishment of the Centre has also been supported by grants from the European Union's Objective 1 Programme and the Welsh Assembly Government's Knowledge Exploitation Fund.
