Gaz de France, Vattenfall ink CO2 storage deal for Germany

28 September 2007 - Gaz de France has signed a deal with European power group Vattenfall for a pilot carbon dioxide storage project in Germany, the French gas company said in a statement.

Under this agreement, Erdgas Erdol GmbH Berlin, a 100 per cent-owned exploration-production affiliate of GdF in Germany, will use CO2 for the enhancement of gas recovery from its almost depleted Altmark gas field, the second largest onshore field in Europe.

Injecting CO2 into the gas field will store the CO2 and boost reservoir pressure, enabling greater gas recovery. Vattenfall will deliver the CO2 required for this process from its own power plant processes.

The project will take approximately 15 months to implement.

During the past few years GdF has also carried out CO2 injection experiments on the K12-B field in the Dutch North Sea.
