TVA to seek nuclear plant license

27 September 2007 -- The Tennessee Valley Authority will seek a license from federal regulators to build a new nuclear power plant. The TVA board voted to seek a Nuclear Regulatory Commission license to build a two-reactor plant at TVA's Bellefonte site on the Tennessee River in northeast Alabama.

Reports said TVA will apply for the license as a partner in the NuStart Energy Development LLC consortium of power companies and reactor manufacturers. The consortium will split the projected $50 million initial design cost with the U.S. Department of Energy.

The TVA board vote came three days after power producer NRG Energy Inc. applied for a nuclear reactor license for two new units at its South Texas Project facility, about 90 miles southwest of Houston.

Constellation Energy Group Inc. has filed a partial application with the NRC, which expects up to five more requests this year. Constellation's proposed new reactor would be located in Lusby, Md.
