Scrubbers promised for Ontario's coal-fired plants

A Progressive Conservative government would spend up to $1 billion to install "scrubbers" on Ontario's coal-fired generating plants while proceeding with plans to close them, John Tory said in a local report.

He offered no firm deadline for shuttering coal plants, saying only that Ontario Power Authority (OPA), which governs energy-generation, believes it could be done by 2014.

The Conservatives also plan to move forward with the construction of new nuclear power plants, as well as pursue renewable power sources like wind and solar energy.
