Drax powers ahead with improved power-plant efficiency and lower carbon emissions

Europe's largest coal-fired power station has revealed it is ahead of schedule with plans to improve efficiency and cut carbon emissions.

Drax said it had made an early start to turbine upgrades and would start installing its first high-pressure turbine this month.

When complete, the project is expected to cut CO2 emissions by one million tonnes a year by replacing much more of the coal it burns with renewable plant biomass. Doing so will help Drax to reach its target for 2009 of generating 10% of its electricity by burning said biomass.
