Russia wants to import power from Finland: report

23 August 2007 - Russia wants to import electricity from Finland to cope with consumption peaks in the St Petersburg area, according to Finnish daily Keskisuomalainen.

Russian national grid operator FSK-EES made the initiative at a meeting with Fingrid this spring.

Current cross-border cables are designed to export power from Russia into Finland.
A working group founded by the grid operators and tasked with establishing the costs involved is to begin its work this autumn.

A two-way link between Finland and Russia would couple the Russian grid to the Nordic electricity market.
