Plutonic Power Corp. of Vancouver announced Wednesday it has applied for a water license and Crown land rights for three more run-of-river power projects on Bute Inlet, north of Powell River, according to a report in the Vernon MorningStar. The three facilities on Gargoyle Creek, Coola Creek and Heakamie River would generate an estimated 320 gigawatts per year, enough energy to supply 32,000 homes.
Plutonic has started construction on another hydro project in the area, on the Toba River system, and has submitted an application to B.C.'s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) for further works on the Upper Toba to create a "green power corridor" served by a common transmission line.
The EAO currently has five run-of-river projects at the pre-application stage, including a series of seven on the Upper Pitt River in the Lower Mainland that has raised environmental concerns. Plutonic recently gave up a project on the Rainy River near Port Mellon after several kinds of fish were discovered, citing increased design costs to protect them.
Wind power proposals have been lining up for EAO approval, including a 700-megawatt project on Banks Island south of Prince Rupert, and a 320-megawatt offshore wind farm in Hecate Strait near the Queen Charlotte Islands.
The Dokie Wind Energy Project has been approved for a site near the WAC Bennett Dam on the Peace River. Its 200 turbines would provide an estimated 300 megawatts to the provincial power grid.
