21 August 2007 - Jordan is expecting Russia's help in developing its own nuclear programme, Jordanian ambassador to Moscow Abd-al-Ilah al-Kurdi has said.
"Jordan intends to build a nuclear power plant. What we have in mind is a nuclear reactor to be used for peaceful purposes," he told a news conference in Moscow.
The ambassador noted that a rise in hydrocarbons prices, as well as the fact that uranium deposits on an industrial scale were available in the country prompted Jordan to consider developing its own nuclear programme.
"Russia, naturally, has vast experience in this field and it could contribute to the implementation of these projects at the state level or through private companies," the Jordanian diplomat said.
A later Interfax report said that the Jordan ambassador invited Russian companies to do business in Jordan. Russian companies could take part in the development of energy facilities and port infrastructure, in geological exploration and the construction of a canal linking the Red Sea with the Dead Sea, the ambassador said.
