18 June 2007 - Electricite de France's power distribution business will operate independently from its retail business when energy markets open fully July 1, the state-controlled company said in a statement.
Following newspaper reports that the joint distribution business of GDF and Electricite de France would not be separated in time for the opening of residential energy markets July 1, EDF said it was taking measures to make sure "all residential customers will be able to choose their supplier freely and simply from July 1."
EDF has made all the necessary changes to guarantee that all suppliers would have equal access to the distribution grids from this date, it said.
On 14 June, EDF's board approved the movement of distribution assets over to a subsidiary, away from its supply business, by 1 January 2008. Gaz de France and EDF have created this new subsidiary for the independent operation of their gas and power networks. On the distribution side, GDF and EDF have always shared resources, including staff. GDF released a statement to the same effect, saying their gas distribution business would equivalently operate independently from 1 July.
