Duke to build single coal unit in North Carolina

10 May 2007 -- Duke Energy Corp. CEO James Rogers was quoted by the Associated Press as saying the utility will move forward with plans to build a single coal-fired generator at its Cliffside power plant in western North Carolina.

Rogers told reporters the company is "going to do everything it can to make it happen," barring any unforeseen developments. The state Public Utilities Commission rejected the company's original request to build two generators.

Duke sought a permit for two new 800 MW coal-fired units at its Cliffside Steam Station in May 2005. In February, regulators said they would allow the company to build one generator.
