30 April 2007 - German utility RWE and the Energy Carbon Fund of Russian energy player RAO UES have agreed to develop a project that is aimed at increasing the energy efficiency of the Territorial Generation Company-4 (TGC-4) power plants.
During the first phase of the TGC-4 joint project, RWE's experts will assess the potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at the plants and for improving the efficiency of the plants' equipment. Based on the assessment results, RWE and the Energy Carbon Fund will subsequently work on plans to achieve these environmental objectives, RAO UES said.
The Russian energy company added that RWE would then purchase the carbon credits obtained as a result of efficiency enhancement projects, which RAO UES will finance with the proceeds from the carbon credit sales. RAO UES said that it established the Energy Carbon Fund in 2000, and that the body's principal objective is to reduce the greenhouse effect and the anthropogenic environmental impact.
