23 April 2007 - Japan and the United States plan to form a joint steering committee to discuss peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and USA president George W. Bush will agree to set up the committee when they meet on 27 April.
The committee is expected to mainly discuss how to promote the US' Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) initiative. The GNEP, announced by the US Department of Energy in February 2006, is designed to develop nuclear fuels and reprocessing technology to enhance energy security, while promoting nuclear nonproliferation.
Japan and the United States are working on details of a comprehensive partnership in energy security, which the two countries agreed to forge in January.
So far, the nations have agreed to set up working groups in such areas as development of fast-breeder reactors and small nuclear reactors under the GNEP. They have also agreed to start talks on cooperation toward peaceful use of nuclear energy globally.
