Japan's power generation hits record for third straight year

16 April 2007 - The total amount of electric power generated by ten major Japanese power companies hit a record high in fiscal 2006 for the third straight year, according to industry data.

For the fiscal year 2006, which ended on 31 Match, the total electricity generation stood at 971.3bn kWh, up 0.7 per cent from the previous year, the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan said in a preliminary report. The figure included electricity the companies bought from wholesalers.

Growing industrial power demand on the back of the country's economic recovery contributed to the rise, although demand for the heating purpose decreased due to the unusually warm winter. The eight power companies other than Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Kansai Electric Power Co. posted record highs.
