10-April-2007 -- The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported today that, after scrapping plans to build at least eight new coal-fired plants, TXU now plans to expand its generating fleet by adding the nation's largest nuclear power plants.
This shift from coal to nuclear comes at a time when three other Texas utilities are also looking at adding nuclear power to their generating fleet, the WSJ article said. If TXU's and the other utilities' plans are carried out, Texas could have the largest nuclear fleet of any state in the nation within the next 10 years, according the story, which says the reactors TXU selected are 50 percent larger than its current reactors. The WSJ reports that TXU selected Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan to design and build the reactors.
