AEP shops for wind capacity

4 April 2007 -- American Electric Power said it wants to buy up to 260 MW of wind power in West Virginia or Virginia for its Appalachian Power unit. The company also wants to add 100 MW of wind-generated electricity for its Indiana Michigan Power subsidiary.

AEP said it is seeking long-term wind power supply contracts for both subsidiaries and is considering sites in Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana and Michigan.

The contracts would be the first step toward adding 1,000 MW of wind energy by 2011. Bids for the power contracts are due April 30 and AEP said delivery should start in 2008.

AEP already owns two wind farms in Texas and buys wind power there and in Oklahoma.

West Virginia has one wind farm in Tucker County, though several others have been proposed. In Virginia, wind farms are under consideration in Highland County near the West Virginia border as well as in Roanoke and Patrick counties.
