Southern wins DOE approval for Florida coal plant

3 April 2007 -- Southern Co. has won approval to build a coal-fired power plant in Florida that will use coal gasification technology to reduce emissions levels, the Energy Department said.

The $569 million, 285 MW plant, will be located at the existing Stanton Energy Center near Orlando. It will receive $235 million in federal funding, the government said. The plant will be co-owned by Southern, the Orlando Utilities Commission and KBR Inc.
