3 April 2007 -- The Associated Press reported that nearly a decade after emerging from bankruptcy, Big Rivers Electric Corp. reached an agreement allowing it to resume operational control of its western Kentucky power plants.
The three plants have been operated by Western Kentucky Energy Corp. (a unit of Louisville-based E.ON U.S.) since a 1998 lease agreement was signed, designed to help Big Rivers regain financial stability after its bankruptcy.
Both sides reportedly have targeted this fall to hand off of control as part of a recently signed lease-termination agreement.
Transferring control of the plants will give Big Rivers more flexibility to finance infrastructure improvements. A spokesman said Big Rivers is operating "comfortably in the black", but faces just over $1 billion in debt, most of it owed to the Rural Utilities Service. Big Rivers took on the debt while building power plants and related transmission facilities.
