Westar Energy ups interest in Jeffrey Energy Center

2 April 2007 -- Westar Energy, Inc. has completed the purchase of Aquila, Inc.'s 8 percent leasehold interest in Jeffrey Energy Center for a base purchase price of $17.9 million and the assumption of obligations under an existing lease. Westar has entered into a purchase power agreement with Mid-Kansas Electric (MKEC) to sell the energy related to the 8 percent interest purchased from Aquila. Concurrently, MKEC is purchasing Aquila's Kansas electric utility properties.

Jeffrey Energy Center, northwest of St. Marys, Kan., is a 2,400 MW coal fired power plant. With this transaction, Westar Energy owns 92 percent of the energy center, with Aquila continuing to own the other 8 percent.

Westar Energy, Inc. is the largest electric utility in Kansas, providing electric service to about 669,000 customers. Westar Energy has about 6,000 megawatts of electric generation capacity and operates and coordinates about 33,600 miles of electric distribution and transmission lines.
