Hydro plant workers pull man from Niagara ice floe

28 March 2007 -- Hydroelectric plant workers rescued a man from an ice floe in the Niagara River around one kilometer from the brink of Niagara Falls, after the man became stranded on a chunk of ice.

Police say the man was trying to cross illegally into the United States last Saturday with the help of an air mattress.

Employees at a nearby Ontario Power Generation station closed the dam that regulates the flow of water in the river and pulled him out. After his rescue, the man was treated for hypothermia and charged under the Canada Immigration Act.
