RWE npower has submitted preliminary proposals to the British government to build the first new coal fired power station in the country for more than 20 years.
Npower, owned by German power firm RWE, said on Tuesday it had submitted a scoping document to the Department of Trade and Industry for a new £1bn ($1.93bn) 1600 MW power station. The firm said if approved the new power station in Tilbury, Essex would be operational by 2013 and would replace the firm's existing coal-fired plant on the site.
Npower said the "hard coal" power station would emit around 9m tonnes of carbon a year, 20 per cent less pollution than current 1600 MW generators. However, the amount of carbon actually pumped into the atmosphere is likely to stay around the same as Tilbury currently produces only around 1000 MW of power.
Drax C, part of the Drax complex - Europe's second largest coal fired plant, was the last power station to be commissioned in 1986. Europe's largest coal fired power station, is Britain's largest single source of carbon dioxide. Last year it produced 22.7 million tonnes, about equal to emissions from all of the Republic of Ireland's heavy industry.
